Happy Birthday, Josey!

Dear Hearts,

January 27, is the birthday of Josey Louise Russell: daughter of Molly and Daniel Russell; grandson of Mercy and Hal Clevenger; niece, great niece, cousin and friend to a whole bunch more.

The past year little Josey has been an inspiration to her parents--mama at her drawing board and daddy in the kitchen--and the source of so much joy. I'm sure she rules their world and their hearts with an adorable smile on her face.

Happy birthday, sweet Josey, and may you have 122 more healthy ones, by the Aunt Joannie Sullivan Law of Longevity Aspiration of 2008.

God bless us and save us and keep us from harm.

Happy Birthday, Mary!

Dear Hearts,

Mary and Ella enjoying life!
January 23rd is the birthday of Mary Reid Sullivan: daughter of George and Ellie Reid; wife of Mickey; mother of Oscar, Beatrice and Georgia; niece, aunt, cousin and friend to many more.

Mary has supported her family in every way imaginable, raising three curious, intelligent, healthy and talented children along with Mick. I believe she was the first in-law of that generation of Sullivans--a trailblazer who we are grateful to call ours.

Happy Birthday, Mary, and may you have 74 more healthy ones, by the Aunt Joannie Sullivan Law of Longevity Aspiration of 2008.

God bless us and save us and keep us from harm.

Happy Birthday, Henry!

Dear Hearts,

January 23rd is the birthday of Henry Knox Sullivan: son of Matt and Lisa; brother of Matty and Georgia; husband of Alyssa; cousin to scores and friend of even more. And we're adding another title--Daddy!

Yes, our Henry met and married the girl of his dreams and the two are now preparing for the arrival of their baby in the coming months! Henry is happier than ever and we are all thrilled for them.

He continues his work in carpentry, holding General Building License and taking on projects one after the other. Henry has built serious tree houses in a few different states, beautiful fencing throughout Northern and Southern California and has tackled full renovations.

He also continues to create music and share that talent with others on social media and in real life. Henry remains the quiet, thoughtful and considerate man we all know and love.

Happy Birthday Henry, and may you have 92 more healthy ones, by the Aunt Joannie Sullivan Law of Longevity Aspiration of 2008.

God bless us and save us and keep us from harm.

Happy Birthday, Bobby!

Dear Hearts,

January 23rd is the birthday of Robert Mitchel Lewis: son of Paul and Margaret; brother of Mary Ella, PJ, William and Timothy; cousin to dozens and friend to all. He is a fine young man, and, like his Uncle Bobby, is named after his Grandpa, Bob.

He is a great mix of his parents in looks and spirit, as well as intelligence, athleticism and goodness. As a high school senior, Bobby is over six feet tall and has proven himself to be a valuable asset on the football field, in the classroom and throughout campus. He serves his football team on both sides of the ball as a middle linebacker and running back. He competes in track and field and is a member of the National Honor Society. And Bobby has been a student leader coordinating blood drives at St. Mary's.

His sights are now set on college where he wants to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering. Possibly at St. Thomas College in Minnesota, where his second cousin Maggie (Merwin) Hanjani received her law degree!

Happy Birthday, Bobby, and may you have 107 more healthy ones, by the Aunt Joannie Sullivan Law of Longevity Aspiration of 2008.

Living in Baltimore, Lucy is happily busy with personal and professional life. As a gifted artist, she has produced an album and continues to explore music-making with great creativity and skill. She currently works as a manager at the Creative Alliance, an organization that works to bring artists together to build art and education program in the Baltimore area.

Dear Hearts,

January 22nd is the birthday of Ryan Robert Huffman: husband of Katie O.; father of Caroline, Grace and June; son of Mike and Susan; brother of Jennifer and John; son-in-law to Mike and Joan; cousin, nephew and friend to many. I think he is the spitting image of a young James Caan.

Ryan is a multi-talented guy--an electrical contractor, talented mountain bike racer and a wonderful husband and father. This same man who oversaw and did much of the work on building their home in Mt. Baldy is the same one who will happily sit for his three daughters' salon treatments. His humor is understated and his dependability is solid.

Happy Birthday, Ry, and may you have 88 more healthy ones, by the Aunt Joannie Sullivan Law of Longevity Aspiration of 2008.

With one of the biggest and brightest smiles I've ever seen, Bobby moves about his world with kindness and good humor, much like his namesake and father. And that smile is brighter than ever since he became a grandfather!

As an attorney working in insurance defense, bad faith, coverage, professional liability defense and general litigation, he never speaks of his professional success (Selected for The Best Lawyers in America) but will gladly point out the accomplishments of his wife, children and extended family members.

God Bless Uncle John

Dear Hearts,

January 22nd is anniversary of the birth of John Joseph Whalen: son of Jim and Johanna Whalen; husband of Helen Wiley Whalen (daughter of Boom and Boomp); father of Christian, Teresa, Damian, Lisa and Mercy; and grandfather and uncle of many.

He lived in many places, attended various schools, served in the military and fell in love with Aunt Helen when he was a student at Loyola Chicago. They were married in 1951 and the adventure began.

He taught elementary school in the Chicago area and finished a master's degree before packing up the family (Helen, Christian, Teresa and Damian) in 1957 to head to the Territory of Alaska, where the Bureau of Indian Affairs had teaching positions for couples. The next several years took Uncle John to teaching positions in Stevensville, Red Lodge and finally Missoula where he became the Chair of the English Department at Hellgate High School.

He was a superb teacher and a very funny man, from his use of accent, to his songs and poems, to his fine telling of a joke. He died at home on May 20, 2015.

Happy Birthday in heaven, Uncle John. God bless us and save us and keep us from harm.

Love, Patty

God Bless Dad

 Dear Hearts,

He was a force here on earth--big, smart, athletic, strong, faithful and funny--and we all miss him terribly. He died in his sleep on the Feast of the Archangels, September 29, 1990. Someone made the joke that it was the perfect day since it would take three strong angels to carry him up to heaven.

So, we wish you a happy birthday in heaven, Dad. Please continue to watch over us. We pray that you are back in wedded bliss with Mom, dancing, laughing and singing with all your loved ones. And enjoying the company of Mary Fran, John and all your beloveds.

God bless us and save us and keep us from harm.

Love,

Most of our lives have been enriched by his goodness and talent.

Brian continues to steer the ship of his business--Personalized Business Service--with wisdom and intelligence. With his eye on retirement, he is backing off the day-to-day work and looking forward to selling the business one day soon.

He remains a master of so many practices--auto mechanics, accounting, travel, dirt bike riding, investment management and so much more. He's now worked a few new disciplines into his repertoire through his grandparenting--interpersonal negotiations, conflict resolution and tea party etiquette.

So, happy birthday, Brian, and may you have 59 more healthy ones, by the Aunt Joannie Sullivan Longevity Aspiration Protocol of 2008.

God Bless Booma/Mom

Dear Hearts,

January 13th is the anniversary of the birth of Anna Mildred Conick Sullivan, also known as Booma or Mom. She was the wife of John Jeremiah "Lefty" Sullivan, mother of eight: Big Sully, Bob and Auntie Nan and Auntie Margaret, and four other little babies, two of whom only took a few breaths, and one who lived a month, John Jeremiah, Jr., and one who only lived an hour, James Patrick.

Big Sully was born next, was the first to live, and got James Patrick's name, in the Irish tradition. There were so many babies who died, during the Famine, and then later from the endemic lung malformations from the malnutrition of the Famine in the generations afterward, that it was very common to have two Johns, James, Patricks, Marys, Margarets etc. The first one would die too early and the Irish felt that they were maybe still there somehow and just got the next body.

She lived hard with those losses, and there is a story of when Baby John died in the crib right before them, she pulled Lefty to his knees and they offered the little baby back to God with thanks for the few weeks and hope for the future. She somehow had the ability to summon great reserves of strength. She said the baby belonged to God, God had given them the baby for a few minutes, and now they would give him back.

Lefty said she was his entire strength in those few minutes, because he was ready to die himself, after watching his little one lose that fight. He was very tender--she was a mother to the core, but tough as an iron bar.

She received three, THREE, telegrams from the War Department saying her son's plane had been hit on three different occasions. The plane was seen going down, no chutes, and he was believed to be dead. Booma wept until she was out of tears, and then word would come that he had made it back to England, and then a few months later, another death gram. That would have been her fifth lost son.

She and her two sisters, Aunt Eleanor Mitchell and Aunt Alice Buckley, were Lefty's bridge partners for most of his young adulthood, and man, could Booma play bridge. She would skin you out in one hour flat and leave you dripping blood on the floor.

She used to make private moments with each of her grandchildren, washing their hands and faces and asking them about school and baseball. She loved baseball, but would not allow anyone to go to Cubs park, and she hated Comiskey for the way he had treated Lefty and the other White Sox.

The branch springing from Jim called her Booma, and the branch springing from Bob called her Mom, and she called Lefty "Sully."

She died in Phoenix, in the bosom of her family on August 8, 1979, at age 85.

Happy Birthday, Booma, Mom, Anna, and please look out for us all, and lend us your strong heart. God bless us and save us and keep us from harm.

Love, Patty

Happy Birthday, Jane!

Dear Hearts,
Jerry and Jane enjoy dinner in
Central Park.

January 8 is the birthday of Jiyoon Yu Sullivan: daughter of Chang Jin Yu and Jeong Hee Han; sister of Paul; auntie of Caleb and 24 Sully cousins; wife of Jerry, in-law and friend to scores more lucky folks. She is Jane to all of us and we are so happy to call her ours.

Professionally, Jane's title is Vice President, Wealth Management Global Investment Office for Morgan Stanley in NYC. She might describe her work as a financial writer, but her talents go so far beyond that. She understands the culture and dynamics of high finance and is able to communicate clearly on behalf of others in that discipline. In a few different languages too!

Jane has a peaceful presence and a sharp wit--a delightful combo. Her interests outside of work are diverse, her faith inspiring and her generosity and kindness inspirational. As she and Jerry continue to travel the world, Jane becomes more and more interesting. Also, I'm guessing she could kick butt on Jeopardy.

So, happy birthday, Jane, you have 87 more healthy ones, by the Aunt Joannie Sullivan Law of Longevity Aspiration of 2008.

God Bless John

Dear Hearts,

January 8th is the birthday of John Vincent Sullivan: son of Jim and Mary Claire: brother of Jim, Mary Fran, Mike, Matt, Anne, Jerry, Margaret and Patty: husband of Nancy: father of Mike, Lucy and Maggie: grandfather of Evangeline, Violet and Brandon; nephew, uncle, cousin and friend to so many more.

He died on July 14, 2022 after about 1 1/2 years of treatment for melanoma. In true John fashion, he made his exit so as not to burden anyone. But we all know John was never, ever a burden. He personified love, respect, kindness, compassion and humor. He held all the best characteristics of our family and his departure still grieves us. Thinking of him catching up to Mary Fran in heaven, however, brings about a smile and giggle.

I could write pages about what a good man John was, but instead I'll encourage you all to offer your perspective in the comments here. I'm also including a link to John's obituary where many of his friends and associates have left their kind words. He is admired by all walks of life, and he is loved and missed by all of us.

God bless us and save us and keep us from harm.

God Bless Uncle Bob

Dear Hearts,

December 30th is the anniversary of the death of our third patriarch (since we have been in the New World), Robert Mitchel Sullivan, born December 2, 1928, and died December 30, 2007.

He is the husband of Darlene Shajin Silva Sullivan, the son of John Jeremiah (Lefty, our first patriarch in America) and Anna Conick Sullivan. He was the brother of James Patrick Sullivan, Sr. (Big Sully, our second patriarch), Sister Anna Rita Sullivan, Order of Preachers (Dominicans), and Sister Margaret Sullivan, Order of Preachers.

He was father of John, Jim, Bobby, Paul, Tim, Mike, Mary, Margaret, Ella and Peter, and the grandfather of 50 and great grandfather to a growing number for sure!

Uncle Bob and Aunt Darlene lived one of the great love stories with forty years of marriage, a shining example to all of us. Individually and together, they brought to life the phrase, "There's always room for more!" In other words, all were welcome in their lives, their hearts and their home. Back in the mid 1970s, Uncle Bob scooped up three of us Sullivans from So Cal and brought us along with his own large bunch on a camping trip to Baja, Mexico!

He had the best voice--so kind and sure, and kept us riveted with his wonderful storytelling. But like his brother, my dad, when an injustice had occurred--look out! That voice was strong and sure.

We are so fortunate to have had him for those many years and his advice and influence lives on through his children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren. I know my parenting efforts are greatly informed by Uncle Bob and Aunt Darlene.

Thank you, Almighty God, for Bob Sullivan, husband, father, brother, son, grandfather, uncle, priest, warrior, counselor, and faithful servant of The Living God.

God bless us and save us and keep us from harm.

Love, Patty

Happy Birthday, Francesca!

She is a truly happy girl with long gorgeous black hair, a quick wit and a loving heart. Francesca continues to display a very real passion for animals and I'm sure will very naturally pursue that field as she gets older.

She is the fourth Frances carrying the name, along with Boom Boom, Mary Fran, Frannie Ella, and then there are also Claire Marie Frances, and James Patrick Francis Sullivan, and Johanna Frances Clark, and Margaret Frances Sullivan, and Great-great-great grandmother Wanda Frances Zinn, and of course, Teresa, Dave and Camden Francis. God Bless Bud

Dear Hearts,

December 20th is the anniversary of the birth of Edgar Allen Cusick, Bitsy's Dad, known to the Calumet Region, where he lived and died, as Bud. He started and ran the famous Budd Auto Body, still in business, run by his son, Brian Bud Cusick.

Bud served in the Army Air Corps during WWII, like Big Sully, and taught tail gunners on bombers. He was a wonderful man and a fine husband and father, and Bitsy loves him so. He had a special place in his heart for her, and has come to her in dream since his passing, to tell her how he loves her.
