Happy Birthday, Steven!

Dear Hearts,

April 1 is the birthday of Steven Wolfgram, an Army mate of Jim's.

From Jim:

"Steven is a real American hero, an infantry lieutenant colonel who, when he was a captain and I was a lieutenant, taught me more about courage and duty, than anyone I encountered in the Army except Whitey, more than I learned at West Point, more than I learned in Ranger School, because of his example. He is Steven Wolfgram of Washington State by way of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin.

"He never understood the impact he had on me. I gave him a hard time and I didn't ever tell him how I felt about him. He was very hard-nosed and very fair, and very human. And if you leveled with him, he kept the brass off of you. He was also--still is--very funny.

"Steven wore the Silver Star on his chest--the Silver Star is right under the Medal of Honor and Distinguished Service Cross--but he swept any reference to that away, saying, in the manner of every true infantry combat veteran I ever knew, that he was no hero, because he was alive. It's the ones who fell on beaches, rice paddies, deserts and hilltops who were his heroes.

"Well, he is a true hero even if he denies it, and he is truly one of mine. Thank you, Boss."

And Happy Birthday. May you have 47 more healthy ones by the Aunt Joannie Sullivan Law of Longevity Aspiration of 2008.

God bless us and save us and keep us from harm.

Love,
Seamus the Older & Patty

Happy Birthday, Johanna!

Dear Hearts,

April 1st is the birthday of Johanna Frances Clark, daughter of Lisa Whalen and Jim Clark, niece, cousin and friend to a whole bunch others.

Johanna is an adventurous and creative young woman. Living in Seattle, she is thriving as an artist in a super vibrant creative community. Professionally, Jo is a baker and manager at Belle Epicurean, a high-end bakery serving delicious pastries throughout the state of Washington. We hope the shop has been able to stay open through the challenges of coronavirus.

So, happy birthday Johanna, and may you have 101 more healthy ones by the Aunt Joannie Sullivan Law of Longevity Aspiration of 2008.

God bless us and save us and keep us from harm.

Happy Birthday, Joan!

Dear Hearts,

April 1 is the birthday of Joan Shepson Sullivan, wife of Mike; sister of Paul an Lynn; mother of Katie O. and John, grandmother of Caroline, Charlie, Grace, Micky and June; sister-in-law, aunt, cousin and friend to scores more. She is, in fact, the author of the Aunt Joannie Sullivan's Law of Longevity Aspiration of 2008 which is invoked at the end of every Dear Hearts greeting. Click here for more information on that law.

Joan  is just about the nicest person I know. No kidding--I've never heard her say a disparaging word about anyone. And in this positive and loving attitude, she exhibits knowledge and compassion about everything in life. Yes, she possesses a bachelors in Sociology and a masters in Education/Guidance & Counseling, but Joan comes by this goodness and wisdom naturally.

Retirement came right in time for Joan, as she has jumped into grandparenting with such zeal! Her grandkids are so lucky to have her in their lives--she will drop everything to talk, read, play, etc. with each of them.

And she can make us laugh! Her unsuspecting jokes and matter-of-fact hilarity make every interaction a pleasure! She's like a real-life Marcel the Shell!

Happy birthday, Joannie, and may you have 48 more healthy ones, by your law--the Aunt Joannie Sullivan Law of Longevity Aspiration of 2008.

God bless us and save us and keep us from harm.

Happy Birthday, Patrick

Dear Hearts,

April 1st is the 18th birthday of Patrick Joseph Sullivan, son of Bobby and Nicole; brother of Jeremiah, Ella and Thomas; grandson, nephew, cousin and friend to dozens more. He's a young man whose confidence and humility makes spending time with him very enjoyable.

Patrick is a senior at St. Mary High School in Phoenix and is a member of the school's 9-time state champion football team. He played as a half back and linebacker for the Knights in the fall and can be seen making a killer run in the video here. He and his classmates are due to graduate this spring, and we hope and pray all those families will be able to celebrate the accomplishments of their kids together in a healthy world.

So, happy birthday Patrick, and may you have 107 more healthy ones by the Aunt Joannie Sullivan Law of Longevity Aspiration of 2008.

God bless us and save us and keep us from harm.

Happy Birthday, Maggie!

Dear Hearts,

March 31st is the birthday of Margaret Caroline Merwin Hanjani, daughter of Mary Fran and Gary; sister of Joe, Kate and Luke; wife of Kameron; mama of Francesca and Inez; niece, cousin, in-law and friend to so many more. She is one of eight Margarets in our family!

Maggie is still enjoying maternity leave after the birth of sweet baby Inez, but will be heading back to the office whenever the coronoavirus allows such freedom. She works as a Privacy Officer at Medtronic in Minnesota, but is able to do a lot of work out of the home. She and Kameron have recently purchased a new house in Chaska and have created a gorgeous and peaceful home there.

Maggie continues to amaze me with an impressive combination of talent and humility. The woman is gifted in so many ways, yet she'll never let you know. She is funny as heck, refreshingly honest, wicked smart and loving has the day is long. She, like Katie, helps me remember everything about Mary Fran and I am so grateful--style, humor, French language, integrity...

One of my favorite memories of Maggie was having to wake her up for school and get her to the bus stop when I visited Fond du Lac in the early 1990s (MF had to leave the house early). With her jet black hair tousled across the pillow, Maggie slept like the dead. Waking her and getting her upright was like pulling a boulder from wet cement. What made it so hard to do this was not her unwillingness to rise, but to make such an adorable little girl miserable. I shoulda let her sleep.

Happy birthday, sweet Maggie, and may you have 88 more healthy ones, by the Aunt Joannie Sullivan Law of Longevity Anticipation of 2008.

God bless us and save us and keep us from harm.

Happy Birthday, Ava!

Dear Hearts,

March 29th is the 14th birthday of Ava Noelle Hareid, daughter of Aaron Hareid and Kate Merwin; granddaughter of Mary Fran and Gary; sister of Henry; niece, half sister; cousin and friend to many more. Although her birthday plans had to be postponed due to the social distancing required to fight the coronoavirus, she still included her friends on a live stream when she blew out her candles!

Ava's talents are diverse--she is a gifted illustrator (check out her Instagram account ava.hareid.arts); an impressive soccer player; and sings as a soprano at Falcon Ridge Middle School. Indeed, Ava is one of 57 students from her entire school district selected by audition to participate in state honor choir. They performed beautifully in November at St. Andrew’s Church in Mahtomedi. She is also an excellent big sister, cousin and babysitter.

Happy birthday, sweet Ava, and may you have 111 more healthy ones, by the Aunt Joannie Sullivan Law of Longevity Aspiration of 2008.

God bless us and save us and keep us from harm.

Love, Patty

Happy Birthday, Georgia!

Dear Hearts,

March 29th is the 9th birthday of Georgia Lucille Sullivan, daughter of Dr. Mickey and Mary; sister of Oscar and Beatrice; granddaughter of Jim, Bitsy and Nancy; niece, cousin and friend to a bunch of other lucky folks. According to Jim, she is soulful and sweet, calm and twinkly and smiley, and so very beautiful.

Georgia has beautiful long hair and looks so pretty with it styled in long braids, as you can see in the picture. These days she and her family are sacrificing quite a lot--her daddy must live separate from the family so as not to compromise anyone with exposure to the coronavirus. Mick works in a hospital that is treating COVID-10 patients and will not risk bringing the infection into his home. The good news is that Georgia and her siblings see dad everyday since he is living in a large RV in their driveway! Love in the time of coronoavirus!

So, happy birthday, Georgia, and may you have 116 more healthy ones, by the Aunt Joannie Sullivan Law of Longevity Aspiration of 2008.

God bless us and save us and keep us from harm.

Happy Birthday, Thomas!

Dear Hearts,

March 27th is the 20th birthday of Thomas Edward Sullivan, son of Bobby and Nicole; brother of Jeremiah, Ella and Patrick, nephew, cousin and friend to many, many more. I find it amazing how much Thomas looks like his dad, Bobby!

A few years ago, Thomas set off to his first year of college at the University of Dallas. By all accounts, he's thriving academically, spiritually and socially. He certainly couldn't get away with much, as Jeremiah and Ella were also students at UD!

Thomas spent last summer in Rome with the university's study abroad program. I'm guessing today he may be studying from a different distance--back in Phoenix, due to this nasty bug that's going around. I'm sure he'll keep his nose to the grindstone and be named again to the Honor Roll at UD.

Happy birthday, Thomas, and may you have 106 more healthy ones, by the Aunt Joannie Sullivan Law of Longevity Anticipation of 2009.

God bless us and save us and keep us from harm.

The Feast of the Annunciation

The Story of the Annunciation of the Lord

The feast of the Annunciation, now recognized as a solemnity, was first celebrated in the fourth or fifth century. Its central focus is the Incarnation: God has become one of us. From all eternity God had decided that the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity should become human. Now, as Luke 1:26-38 tells us, the decision is being realized. The God-Man embraces all humanity, indeed all creation, to bring it to God in one great act of love. Because human beings have rejected God, Jesus will accept a life of suffering and an agonizing death: “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13).

Mary has an important role to play in God’s plan. From all eternity, God destined her to be the mother of Jesus and closely related to him in the creation and redemption of the world. We could say that God’s decrees of creation and redemption are joined in the decree of Incarnation. Because Mary is God’s instrument in the Incarnation, she has a role to play with Jesus in creation and redemption. It is a God-given role. It is God’s grace from beginning to end. Mary becomes the eminent figure she is only by God’s grace. She is the empty space where God could act. Everything she is she owes to the Trinity.

Mary is the virgin-mother who fulfills Isaiah 7:14 in a way that Isaiah could not have imagined. She is united with her son in carrying out the will of God (Psalm 40:8-9; Hebrews 10:7-9; Luke 1:38).

Together with Jesus, the privileged and graced Mary is the link between heaven and earth. She is the human being who best, after Jesus, exemplifies the possibilities of human existence. She received into her lowliness the infinite love of God. She shows how an ordinary human being can reflect God in the ordinary circumstances of life. She exemplifies what the Church and every member of the Church is meant to become. She is the ultimate product of the creative and redemptive power of God. She manifests what the Incarnation is meant to accomplish for all of us.--https://www.franciscanmedia.org/annunciation-of-the-lord/

Happy Birthday, Patty-Reprise

Dear Hearts,

It’s Patty’s birthday. And we all agree nobody should be in charge of writing their own birthday Dear Hearts. And Patty’s too humble to write about the incredible reality of her goodness. So I’m doing it with the help of my great siblings and a few other loved ones (husband, sons, niece, brother-in-law, nephew, grandnephews, friend) thrown in. So this is a compilation from many.

These are things that popped into the minds of Patty’s loved ones when I asked, “what can you tell me about Patty/Mom/Aunt Patty?

Patty, grab some tissues and buckle up. May you have the happiest of birthdays in this surreal time in all of our lives. (I’m going from oldest to youngest here, with a twist at the end.)

Jim - Patty, you are my precious baby sister, and also, I appreciate sincerely the strength, validity and accuracy of most of your pronouncements. You are right on the money. You, with our sisters, were the guardian angel for mom during her difficult last years, and carried the ball for us all, with the help of our California sibs. But you led the march. You, you're good, you.

Patty is one of those rare women who really and truly understands the zen of baseball, and loves it as much as her brothers love it, but not as much as they love her.

John - I think I remember Patty’s arrival more clearly than any other. She had me at waaaaah. (it didn’t occur to me that someday she would rove the black market for 3.5 gallon toilets.)

Once, when she was less than two months old, I caught Patty on the fly as mom fainted during a middle-of-the-night feeding exercise. when mom came to, she smiled at patty, asked how loud the crash was, laughed at my clinical observation that it rattled the china cabinet, and got right back to business. patty was an angel throughout. And has been ever since.

Mike - patty is one of my valuable resources for baseball and all things related to BMs – technique, texture, color analysis and hygiene. you are also, and have always been, an inspiration for me to try and do better. I love you, pitty pat. Happy birthday.

Matt - she’s an organizational genious – simultaneously generous, brilliant, humble and strong. tremenous mother, wife, sister

She’s a true servant leader – she serves with generosity and she serves well.

Brian – she is the most giving person I know.

Anne – if patty ever wants to know what it was like to pick her up and look into her face as a toddler, she can just pick up June. so often i see pics of june and am sent right back to second grade, coming home from school, and running upstairs to get patty out of her crib after her nap. she was adorable.

G - It took me a long time to realize that patty was a top-flight athlete as a high-school soccer player, and to appreciate that the experience helped her forge some of the admirable charater traits that are often incorrectly assumed to simply redound to the creidt of players of games.

Margaret - Patty is my little-sister-North-Star. This poem says it better than I ever could. I heard this decades ago, and certain people in my life came to mind then, and come to mind now. Patty is one. I started highlighting the lines that REALLY fit Patty. Then I got ¾ of the way through it and had highlighted the whole damn thing. Then I looked at the last ¼. OK. So she’s killing it in every line. (As an example, yesterday she drove many miles to leave a box of quarantine supplies and some cash for a childhood friend who has been forgotten by many. Not by Patty.)

I rewrote this poem to reflect present tense and gender appropriateness (cause we’re talking about a badass woman here). Bessie is cool with it. Here it is:

Success
by Bessie Anderson Stanely

She has achieved success
who lives well,
laughs often, and loves much;

who enjoys the trust of
pure men,
the respect of intelligent women and
the love of little children;
who fills her niche and accomplishes her task;
who leaves the world better than she finds it
whether by an improved poppy,
a perfect poem or a rescued soul;

who never lacks appreciation of Earth's beauty
or fails to express it;

who always looks for the best in others and
gives them the best she has;

whose life is an inspiration;
whose love a benediction

Ange – Patty is beautiful inside and out, a cherished wife, mom, sister, aunt and friend. She’s devoted to her family, and for that we are all lucky.

Lizzy - She is the best player with little kids that I have ever known – she gets in there, right into the child’s world like no one I’ve ever seen. She also has great taste and appreciation for music and the best piggyback song writer on the face of the earth.

Dan – She’s comforting, and loving and I feel like she makes you wanna do the right thing. Whatever that is – she’s got that.

Amanda –Aunt Patty is so accepting and loving. I feel like I could tell her anything –she is so comforting, she loves and accepts you, she makes you feel like she’s known you your entire life. When I talk to her I feel like she’s my own aunt – like my blood. She’s the best .

John (aka Little John) – My mom is the strongest woman I know. She, along with our dad, has raised the most recent cohort of the Moron Club and has done so through endless love, constant support, and a sense of humor at a level difficult for anyone to compete with. She is the best mother I could have ever dreamt of. I love you mom.

Andrew – My mom is the strongest and kindest person I know. The best mom three boys could ask for.

Thomas – My mom is incredibly caring, thoughtful, and thorough in her love for her family, showing up in all sorts of forms. I’m incredibly grateful for her, and love her right back!

Levi – She comes to my house and plays with me.

Amos – She plays with me.

And the last comment, from Kim Flores (Randy’s mom and my co-grandma who has gotten to know Patty well in the past few years) – Patty’s the most amiable person I know. That description doesn’t even go far enough. She makes ME feel good just being in her presence. I could quarantine with her anytime.

Happy B-day Pidge. You are so very loved.

God Bless us and save us and keep us from harm.

Love, Margy

Happy Birthday, Charlie!

Dear Hearts,

March 24th is the sixth birthday of Charlie Armin Sullivan, son of Elizabeth and John, brother of Mickey, grandson of Mike and Joan, nephew, cousin and friend to a bunch others.

If you're keeping track, Charlie joins Mr. Nau, Aunt Patty and Levi in today's celebrations! Since the day he was born, Charlie has sported the most beautiful head of blond hair. He is a curious, intelligent and funny boy with a smile that will melt anyone's heart.

Last fall, Charlie started kindergarten and has yet to give the whole program his approval. What I mean is this, he would rather be at home than at school. My guess is because he could probably get a lot more done if he were in charge! I completely relate to this feeling, Charlie, and if you want a few tips in dealing with the school thing, just call. (Oil of Olay, anyone?)

So, happy birthday, Charlie, and may you have 119 more healthy ones, by the Aunt Joannie Sullivan Law of Longevity Aspiration of 2008.

God bless us and save us and keep us from harm.

Love, Patty

Happy Birthday, Levi!

Dear Hearts,

March 24th is the sixth birthday of Levi Sullivan Flores, son of Lizzy and Randy; brother of Amos and Maggie; grandson of Margaret and Brian; nephew, cousin and friend of many more.

Levi has started kindergarten and is growing fast and furiously. At home he loves taking care of "The Girls," the family's three chickens, devising new ways to scare his little brother, snuggling with his baby sister, fishing with dad, cooking with mom and hiking around the beautiful backdrop of Mt. Baldy Village. He is thoughtful and certain in his opinions, willing to work hard and loves to laugh.

Levi made grandparents out of Margaret (Gigi) and Brian (Yaya) and continues to teach them new things everyday!

So, happy birthday, Levi, and may you have 119 more healthy ones, by the Aunt Joannie Sullivan Law of Longevity Aspiration of 2008.

God bless us and save us and keep us from harm.

God Bless Mr. Nau

Dear Hearts,

March 24th is the birthday of Donald Nicholas "Mike" Nau, the grandfather of Jim III, Micky, Miles, Amos, Franny and 17 others; husband of Pat; father of Nancy, Patsy, Janet, Elizabeth, Nick, Felix and Peter; friend to all. I believe his nickname was "Old Scrap Iron."

My memories of Mr. Nau include his unmistakable white hair, black horn-rimmed glasses and broad smile, as well as the silly and hilarious game that I called "Ish Come Bibbly Eye," in which he would hold my outstretched arm and see how long I could stand his fingers walking up toward my armpit. I rarely could stand it passed my elbow but was always rewarded with laughter and a piece of Juicy Fruit gum, which he ALWAYS had in his pocket.

In 1960, Mr. Nau bought Hammond Machine Works and ran the business with integrity and skill. He eventually sold the company to his son, Peter, in the 1990s. Today, the third generation of the Nau family is working at Hammond Machine Works.

Mr. Nau died on March 31st, 2000 at the age of 81. God bless you, Old Scrap Iron, please continue to watch over all of us.

God bless us and save us and keep us from harm.

Happy Birthday, Patty!

Dear Hearts,
Overlooking Hoover Dam, March 2020

March 24 is my birthday (Patricia, Patty, Pitty Pat, Pidge, P-Bug, Pattissima, Patay, AP), daughter of Jim and Mary Claire; sister of Jim, Mary Fran, John, Mike, Matt, Anne,  Jerry and Margaret; wife of Andy; mother of John, Andrew and Thomas; aunt, cousin, in-law, niece and friend to a bunch more.

These days I am enjoying a charmed life as a good old-fashioned housewife. Many folks describe me as retired, but really I just stopped working for other people at age 50. With a degree in Communications/News Editorial (journalism), I've worked as a magazine editor, ad agency writer/designer and a parochial school development director. I do a little consulting in the marketing realm and recently was employed by the county as a Vote Center employee. By far, my favorite job has been a wife and stay-at-home mom.

I love keeping our home stocked, clean and comfy, visiting with friends, going to concerts and on adventures with Andy; and being available to family and friends who need a little help with anything from babysitting to copy editing.

So, happy birthday to me, and may I have 72 more healthy ones, by the Aunt Joannie Sullivan Law of Longevity Aspiration of 2008.

God bless us and save us and keep us from harm.

Happy Birthday, Annette!

Dear Hearts,

March 18th is the birthday of Annette Keppeler Galvin, wife of the fifth Sullivan brother, Frank Galvin, Papa Sully's godson (known as Knarf), who is a successful commodities trader. He and Amos gave up their career as an arson team to connect with beautiful and sweet women.

Annette is the mom of the beautiful Fiona Sofie Piper Galvin, who will be 5 on the 4th of July. Annette is a great wife and mother and keeps the former bon vivant Frank in check and happy. Also, she has formidable intellect, as anyone knows who has argued with her.

Happy Birthday, Annette, and may you have 85 more healthy ones, by the Aunt Joannie Sullivan Law of Longevity Aspiration of 2008.

Happy Birthday, Sean!

Dear Hearts,

March 15th is the birthday of Sean McDougall Whalen, son of Christian and Moira; brother of Nicholas, Connor and Morgan; nephew, cousin and friend to many more.

Sean currently works as a superintendent in architecture and planning for Findlay/Criss, a general contractor in Denver. With a B.F.A. in Fine Arts from the University of Montana, he has brought his artistic talents to the job in construction drawing. Indeed, Sean is as comfortable working a table saw and router as a pencil and pastels. Sean is also the proud dad of ten-year-old son Isaac,

Happy Birthday, Thomas!

Dear Hearts,

March 14th is the 23rd birthday of Thomas Emmett Bornhop, son of Patty and Andy; brother of John and Andrew, nephew, cousin and friend to lots more. These days he introduces himself as Tom.

Having graduated last spring from the University of Portland with a degree in Business, Thomas returned to So. Cal. and landed a job with the La Jolla Group, the parent company of surfwear brands O'Neill and Hang Ten. He's working in the e-commerce department and enjoying the rather casual dress code! It's a kick to see him wearing clothing (that he buys on a great company discount) that resembles the styles Andy and I wore as kids.👣

These days, Thomas has moved out of mom and dad's house and lives in Orange with his cousin. Outside of work, his time is filled with playing guitars (electric and acoustic), surfing, concert-going and hanging out with his girlfriend, brothers and friends.

So, happy birthday, T-Bone, and may you have 102 more healthy ones, by the Aunt Joannie Sullivan Law of Longevity Aspiration of 2008.

God bless us and save us and keep us from harm.

Love, Mom

Happy Birthday, Annie!

Dear Hearts,

March 14th is the 22nd birthday of Annie Louise Sullivan, daughter of Seamus the Younger and Erin; sister of John, Kathleen, Thomas, Peter, Margaret, Joseph, Brigid, Seamus Benedict and Patrick; niece, cousin and friend to a whole bunch more.

Annie is in her third year at Christendom College in Virginia, working toward a BA in Philosophy. It appears as though she has embraced the college experience with enthusiasm and hard work, serving as the Student Body president, taking a semester in Rome in 2019, working as a special events planner and an admissions counselor.

But it's not all work. Annie has plenty of fun with her friends and her sister, Kathleen, who also studies at Christendom. Annie and a dance partner recently won third place in a Swing & Waltz dance competition at her college. Hopefully this link will lead you to that video posted on her mom's Facebook page--it's a great view!

While she's thriving at college, it's clear Annie's heart is always at home with her family in Omaha, playing, laughing and snuggling with her siblings and parents.

Happy birthday, Annie, and may you have 103 more healthy ones, by the Aunt Joannie Sullivan Law of Longevity Aspiration of 2008.

God bless us and save us and keep us from harm.

God Bless James

Dear Hearts,

March 10th is the anniversary of the birth of James Conick, my great-grandfather, born in Ireland in 1855. He descended from Irish and Scottish Highland warriors, the Scots having descended from Cornish rebels who migrated to Scotland 1000 years ago, and was a life-long cop himself, a detective sergeant on the Chicago Police force. His mother was Mary Ronan, a relative of the first West Pointer killed in action, in 1812 at Fort Dearborn, Chicago, George Ronan.

James emigrated through Canada, getting a start there, as did Jeremiah Sullivan, giving us our long tie to Canada. He married Anastasia Raftis (daughter of Edmund Raftis and Margaret Bolger), and they had Booma/Mom, Anna Mildred Conick Sullivan, wife of Lefty and our grandmother. Their other children were Alice Buckley and Eleanor Mitchell.

There are many apocryphal stories about Grandpa Conick--he went to Europe every year, always taking some grandchildren or nieces and nephews, so there were witnesses to his doings. In Venice, the old man, who went to bed at 8 pm, hung out the window as the singing gondoliers went gliding by, and yelled, "Shut up ye damned foreigners and let a man sleep."

He slept with his gun under his pillow. When Big Sully was little, he slept with Grandpa Conick and would try to get the gun, but Grandpa always woke up. Now and then he would wake up from a whiskey dream and shoot up the house, and one night there actually was a burglar in the house and Grandpa nailed him with two rounds in the butt, hamstringing him and laying him out until the cops arrived.

Grandpa had a lot, a lot, of money--as a Chicago cop. Go figure. Today is the 165th anniversary of his birth. God bless you, John. We pray you are enjoying eternity with all the ancestors and our Father.

God bless us and save us and keep us from harm.

Love, Jim & Patty

God Bless Edward

Dear Hearts,

Edward Wlodzimierz Wilkoszewski, called "Grandpa Eddie," my great-great-grandfather, was born in Paskrzynnie, Poland on March 10th, 1824, and died in Leadville, Colorado on March 26th, 1883. Today is the 196th anniversary of his birth. He was a political organizer in Poland, leading a provincial unit of the democratic forces- an anti-royalist, a resistor of Russian occupation and influence.

Edward commanded a cavalry squadron under Garibaldi in the Battle of Rome. He came to America and learned the trade of picture-frame making, eventually opening and running his own factory near the Chicago River. It burned to the ground in the Great Fire of 1871, taking all his life's work with it. He never recovered fully, suffering from lung damage, and died young of obstructive pulmonary disease. Hence, Leadville.

He married Romualda Gorczynska, daughter of Major Anthony Gorczynski, one of Napoleon's cavalry officers, and Kate Nowierska. Eddie and Romualda had many children, reported to be 22 in number, one of whom was Alfred Wlodzimierz Wilkoszewski, also known as Snaz, who married Wanda Zinn of Gdansk, and they had Boompa.

Please keep watching over us, Edward. We pray you are in heavenly bliss with your family and Jesus, enjoying everlasting life.

God bless us and save us and keep us from harm.

Love, Jim & Patty

Happy Birthday, Malachy!

Dear Hearts,

March 10th is the birthday of Malachy Patrick Daly, husband to Anne, father of Peter, Brid, Malachy Jr., Tina and Sarah, stepfather of Claire and Willis, grandfather to a crew of little ones back in Ireland, brother-in-law and friend to all of us.

Malachy was born in The Republic of Ireland in 1946 where, as an adult, he worked as a police officer in The Guard in Sligo. He and Anne have known each other for a long time, having met during Anne's frequent trips back and forth to Ireland when Claire was attending nursing school there. They've been happily and sweetly married for years.

Malachy is a fine and faithful man, a man full of courage and decency, and a good friend. Happy Birthday, Mal, and may you have 51 more healthy ones, by the Aunt Joannie Sullivan Law of Longevity Aspiration of 2008.

Love, Patty

Happy Birthday, Morgan!

Dear Hearts,

March 10th is the birthday of Morgan Dixon Whalen, son of Christian, brother of Connor, Nicholas and Sean; nephew cousin and friends to many.

Morgan's talents range from working as a carpenter at Black Mountain with his dad, to holding the title of Executive Chef at the HF Bar Ranch in Wyoming.

Happy Birthday Morgan, and may you have 93 more healthy ones, by the Aunt Joannie Sullivan Law of Longevity Aspiration of 2008.

Happy Birthday, Debra!

Dear Hearts,

March 10th is the birthday of Debbie Cusick, sister of Bitsy; mother of Peter, Lizzie and Christine, friend of many.

Debra works as a lighting sales engineer and teaches at Indiana Tech and Purdue, holding two Master's degrees. Adding to that, I found an article online that shows her incredible talent as an artist! Debra and her husband have created an amazing home full of whimsy, history and beauty! Check out this photo essay in the Northwest Indiana Times. Clearly, Debra is an altogether accomplished woman and a good sister and friend to Bitsy and Jim.

Happy Birthday, Debra, and may you have 61 more healthy ones, by the Aunt Joannie Sullivan Law of Longevity Aspiration of 2008.

God bless us and save us and keep us from harm.

Happy Birthday, Ben!

Dear Hearts,

March 10 is the birthday of Benjamin Charles Sullivan, son of Pete and Melody Sullivan; brother of Annie, John, Matthew, Michael and Bo; nephew and cousin to a few dozen, teammate and friend to many.

At nine years old, Ben has developed impressive athletic ability, especially on the basketball court. I got to referee a backyard football game with him and his brothers a few years back and saw his competitive side firsthand. If he's not playing ball himself, he's cheering on his brothers big time. Ben also recently made his first communion and is a very good brother to his five siblings.

Happy Birthday, Ben, and may you have 116 more healthy ones by the Aunt Joannie Sullivan Law of Longevity Aspiration of 2008.

God bless us and save us and keep us from harm.

Happy Birthday, Amos!

Dear Hearts,

March 9 is the 4th birthday of Amos Wiley Flores, second son of Randy and Elizabeth, brother of Levi and Margaret Poppy, grandson of Margaret and Brian, cousin to a new member whose arrival we expect in June, nephew and friend to many more. (Did you catch that folks? Daniel & Amanda are expecting!!!!)

To know Amos is to love him. He is funny as heck, sweet as sugar, smart as a whip and tough as nails. Spending time with him means you will most likely go "hunting," build a few things with tools, and imagine some pretty exciting scenarios in which you must hide or fight. He is a huge Star Wars fan, along with Levi and his daddy, as well as a budding Lego expert. I love talking with Amos--he listens intently to be sure he understands what's being said, then he will repeat the concept back in his own words, tilting his head to the side and nodding to show he gets it.

Amos goes to preschool two days a week, helps take care of the "The Girls," the Flores' three chickens, and is a wonderful big brother to little Maggie. He loves spending time with Yaya in the yard and workshop, and with Gigi in the garden, art studio or kitchen. He does yoga with his mama and goes fishing with daddy, among oodles of other stuff.

Welcome to your fourth trip around the calendar Amos, and may you have 121 more healthy trips, by the Aunt Joannie Sullivan Law of Longevity Aspiration of 2008.

God bless us and save us and keep us from harm.

God Bless Aunt Margaret

Dear Hearts,

March 9th is the 88th anniversary of the birth of Margaret Eileen Sullivan, Sister James Timothy, O.P. (Order of Preachers--the Dominicans).

She was born in 1932 in Chicago, daughter of Lefty and Anna Conick Sullivan and sister of Jim, Bob and Anna Rita, Sister Joanne Marie Sullivan. She died on July 31, 2002 at the Mother house at Adrian, Michigan, in the company of heroes. She is buried with her sisters, right next to Auntie Nan. Margaret and Nan spent a lot of their active lives living with the poor, in the direst of conditions sometimes, and then finally at the peace of the Mother House at their ending stretches.

She was a hero herself, braving the communist, and for that matter, government, thugs in El Salvador, where she had been laboring for the poor. She practiced the sacred injunction to "resist not evil." She also held true and operated on the basis of Jesus of Nazareth's words, "Be not afraid, I go before you always."

Aunt Margaret was mentioned on the floors of the House and Senate, by a group of Irish Catholic congressmen from the east coast, Joe Moakley, Ted Kennedy, Senator Leahy and several others, who were intent on social justice in El Salvador. They looked up to her as an exemplar of bravery. She was cited for this valor in the halls of our legislative branch.

A tall and graceful woman, she was a great athlete and played guitar beautifully. I loved it when the Aunties visited as they focused their complete attention on us children. I can still hear when Aunt Margaret and Aunt Anna Rita would burst into laughter simultaneously!

The Adrian Dominican cemetery with its circular
headstones is a beautiful place of rest for
women who gave their lives in service to God.
Aunt Margaret never said an unkind word that I or anyone else ever heard. We are all so grateful for the security and comfort she enjoyed in her final years at the Motherhouse. Indeed, many of us had the chance to visit Aunt Margaret there in her last year of life. Dr. Seamus the Younger at her funeral, was so right when he said, "She might have never had children, but she sure was a Mom."

Happy Birthday, Auntie. Thank you for your love and goodness. Thank you for your indomitable bravery and your blazing heart for the poor. We will try to live up to it.

God bless us and save us and keep us from harm.

Happy Birthday, Mike!

Dear Hearts,

March 6th is the 44th birthday of Michael Shajin Sullivan, son of Bob and Darlene; husband of Shelly; father of Jake, Seamus, Mia, Augustine, Sofia, Penelope and Maximilian; brother of John, Jim, Bobby, Paul, Tim, Sister John Mary, Margaret, Ella and Peter.

Mike has the truly special quality in him. He's the guy you want on your flank in the tight corners. As gentle and good-hearted a man as you could want, but along with that there is a toughness, way down in there, that everybody counts on. Uncle Bob once said that when he watched and saw how hard Mike tried, he wanted to try to live up to him.

Whether he's working as an experienced sales rep with Merck, or hauling his seven children throughout the southwest with Shelly at his side, Mike is always resourceful and joyful. It was quite hilarious watching him and his crew running and jumping on the beach at midnight as they hunted for grunion at Huntington Beach a few years ago.

Happy Birthday, Mike, and may you have 81 more healthy ones, by the Aunt Joannie Sullivan Law of Longevity Aspiration of 2008.

God bless us and save us and keep us from harm.

God Bless Mercy

Dear Hearts,

March 6 is the anniversary of the birth of Mercy Whalen Clevenger, daughter of John and Helen, sister of Christian, Teresa, Damien and Lisa; mother of Molly and Claire; cousin, niece and friend to many more.

We were all so sad to to hear of Mercy's passing last summer, and a few of us were grateful to be able to attend her beautiful memorial in Missoula.

Mercy was born in Red Lodge, the youngest of five. By 1963, John and Helen had settled in Missoula, where Mercy attended grade school, high school, and college at the University of Montana. She continued her education in nursing and earned her LPN through the Missoula Vo-tech and her RN through Regents College of New York.

Mercy and Hal welcomed their first daughter, Claire, in 1987, followed by Molly the next year. One of Mercy’s greatest joys was being a mother. She volunteered for school and extracurricular activities, shuttled the girls to countless practices, competitions, choir and band concerts, and always showed up to cheer them on. Mercy’s love for the arts and music encouraged creativity and a passion for academics in her children. Having sewn nearly every single Halloween costume for the girls in their childhood, and several formal dresses as well, Mercy instilled the value of making things for yourself in the girls, as her mother had taught her well. She also taught the girls to appreciate excellent cooking and always made sure they were well fed.

Mercy, Hal, Claire and Molly spent warmer days with family on Elbow or Flathead Lake, as well as camping all over the Northwest when the girls were growing up. After the girls were grown, Mercy and Hal often made time to travel to Hawaii, and spent weekends at their cozy cabin on Georgetown Lake. Mercy had a love for games of all sorts. She played softball and golf for several years, and more recently became quite the pool shark.

Mercy approached life with open arms and an open heart. Having committed over 30 years of her life to nursing, primarily in dialysis, it was her passion to care for others. She shed light on those around her, and enriched the lives of countless patients and colleagues during her career as a nurse in Missoula. She will be remembered for her vibrant energy, enthusiastic laugh, and her openness and generosity to all who crossed her path.

God bless you, sweet Mercy. We pray you are enjoying everlasting life and hope you'll please continue to watch over us.

God bless us and save us and keep us from harm.

Love, Patty
